GAINESVILLE, FL – Two tractor-trailers were involved in a massive 15 car pileup on Interstate 75 in Gainesville, FL on Monday, September 27, 2010.

Gainesville is in Alachua County, Florida in the northern part of the state, about 71 miles southwest of Jacksonville.

The chain-reaction crash happened at about 1:13 p.m. on the northbound lanes of I-75 about a half mile north of Northwest 39th Ave. at Mile Marker 390 in Gainesville, Florida.

Details on the accident were released in a Florida Highway Patrol report (FHP) on September 28, 2010. According to the FHP, the pileup started when “a Nissan 4-door, driven by Leonard T. Myers, 16, of Alachua, was going north on I-75 and the car began to hydroplane at mile marker 390 during heavy rain.”

Myers lost control of the car, which spun around and came to a stop facing west crossing the emergency lane and the inside lane on the west shoulder of the Interstate. Vehicles tried to take evasive action and go around the stopped vehicle, but due to the wet, slippery road conditions, a big rig driver and 13 other drivers were unable to avoid a collision.

Road conditions at the time were described as rainy, wet and slippery. Undoubtedly, the rainy weather contributed to this accident. The Nissan 4-door driven by Myers began to hydroplane during a heavy downpour.

One driver was seriously injured when her vehicle was struck by other vehicles. She was identified as 23 year-old Kristin Lange from Lake City, FL. Lange was not initially involved in the 15-car crash and got out of her car to help the driver of the first car. She was out of her vehicle at the time of the collision.

Her vehicle, a 2004 Toyota truck, was the 15th vehicle involved in the accident. It was struck in the rear by the subsequent crashes that occurred after stopping.

All told, the multi-car pileup involved cars, trucks and two semi-tractor trailers.

The FHP reported that two other drivers sustained serious injuries, but that most injuries were reported to be minor and also that charges are pending.
