Accident Facts

A teenage boy is dead after an accident involving his pick-up truck and a tractor-trailer on the Bobby Jones expressway. The youth, Taylor Durrence, lost control of his vehicle and swerved, hitting the semi truck carrying diesel fuel head on. Nineteen-year-old Durrence was killed instantly. The semi truck driver was not injured, although police reported a significant amount of fuel being spilled at the site of the wreck.

Comments from The Trucking Attorneys

Some accidents between passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers appear to be caused by the driver of the smaller vehicle.Professional drivers have a responsibility to be vigilant and drive defensively due to the massive size of their vehicles, but sometimes accidents absolutely cannot be avoided. Most often these wrecks involve fatalities in the passenger vehicle, but sometimes the truck driver is injured or killed as well.

However, drivers of trucks carrying hazardous chemicals or explosive substances must be held to an even higher standard of safety. Not only is the size of the truck a risk factor, but the dangerous nature of the cargo can substantially increase the likelihood of injury or death. Truck carriers must also be aware of the difference in risk factor for cargo and only put their most experienced and safest drivers at the helm of a truck carrying flammable loads. If a truck company knowingly puts an inexperienced or under-trained driver at the helm of a truck carrying explosive cargo, the company may be responsible for any wrecks that result.
