LAKELAND, FL – The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a man from Lakeland, Florida died Tuesday morning, August 24, after his vehicle rear-ended a tractor trailer truck on County Line Road. The vehicle and semi truck crash occurred at about 6:15 a.m. at County Line Road and Drane Field Road, just west of Lakeland.

Lakeland is in Polk County, Florida in the central part of the state about 36 miles northeast of Tampa, 46 miles southwest of Kissimmee and about 55 miles southwest of Orlando.

The tractor trailer was a 2007 Volvo semi-truck driven by Timothy Chism, 39, of West Memphis, Ark. According to the FHP, Chism was stopped on County Line Road, waiting to make a left turn onto Drane Field Road. The right rear of his tractor trailer was partially blocking the inside southbound lane of County Line Road.

According to reports, Matthew Grube, 24, of Lakeland, was driving southbound on County Line Road and failed to avoid the rear of Chism’s tractor trailer. After striking the semi truck, Grube’s 2000 Hyundai Elantra wagon began spinning out of control.

Grube died at the scene of the accident. Reports state that both drivers were wearing seat belts.
