MONTEREY, TN – Two brothers from Cookeville, TN are lucky to be alive after a head on collision with a semi truck on Tuesday afternoon, August 10, 2010. The crash happened around 4:20 p.m. on Highway 84 in Overton County just north of the Overton / Putnam County line.
Monterey is in Putnam County, Tennessee about 19 miles south of Livingston, about 16 miles east of Cookeville, about 88 miles northwest of Knoxville, about 93 miles east of Nashville and about 304 miles northeast of Memphis.
Although Monterey is in Putnam County, the accident occurred in Overton County in about the 3800 block of Livingston Hwy (Highway 84).
Injured in the accident was 16 year-old Zachary Castle from Cookeville, who was driving a Ford Ranger pick up truck, along with his 13-year-old brother, James, who was a passenger in the pickup at the time.
Both brothers were taken to Livingston Regional Hospital. Zach was flown later by helicopter ambulance toĀ University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Family members said he sustained a broken hip, broken jaw and other injuries.

In the article, according to State Trooper Stanley Roberts, Zach Castle, the driver of the pickup truck, was traveling northbound on Highway 84 when he crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming semi-truck head on. Robert Leroy Hoff from Stephens City, VA was the driver of the 18 wheeler. Hoff was not injured in the crash.
Both vehicles sustained major damage.
