A truck driver is being charged with failure to maintain the lane after he drove a 2000 Freightliner box truck through the guardrail on eastbound Interstate 20 and into the Augusta Canal. Driver Brent Whitlock escaped with minimal harm and swam to the shore. His dog was in the truck with him and was seen swimming away from the wreck but has been missing since the accident.

Tractor-trailers have a tendency to sway and over-correct especially at high rates of speed. Truck drivers are taught to anticipate movements of their vehicle to keep it within its lane of travel. New technology also allows a truck driver to be warned when his vehicle is moving out of its lane. It is always truck driver error for a tractor-trailer to leave its lane of travel. If you have been injured or lost a loved one in an accident caused by a tractor-trailer leaving its lane, you deserve compensation. Our experienced trucking attorneys will fight for compensation for the harm and loss you have suffered.

This accident could have been far more disastrous, especially if other vehicles had been involved. According to first responders, Brent Whitlock wrecked in the same spot on Interstate 20 in which a fatal accident occurred on September 2, 2011.
Truck drivers should always maintain their lane of travel, but if they veer out of it, other drivers on the road must be able to react. Share this blog with loved ones as a reminder.
Defensive driving should be taught and practiced from a young age so that drivers can travel safely even when other vehicles on the road behave erratically. Were you taught to drive defensively? Do you think defensive driving class should be mandatory in schools?
