More than 30,000 people are killed in road crashes across the United States annually, says a study by the Association for Safe International Road Travel. Dangerous highways can certainly contribute to this number, though this is especially true when a large truck or commercial vehicle is involved.

GeoTab also recently conducted an experiment to determine the most dangerous highways in the US, and while Georgia didn’t top the list, its neighboring state Florida did. Many of Florida’s highways cross into Georgia and vice versa, and for this reason, Georgians should be aware.

Florida: A Dangerous State to Drive In

Out of the many states with dangerous highways, GeoTab found Florida’s US-1 to be the deadliest, with more than 1,050 fatalities and 1,011 crashes in just the past ten years.

Since Florida borders Georgia, Georgians should take note and travel with caution. Truck drivers also frequently use US-1 when commuting between states. No driver is responsible for another driver’s actions, but you can help ensure your safety and the safety of others simply by taking a few preventative measures.

Along with US-1, Georgia’s State Route 11 was listed as one of the most dangerous highways in the state. State Route 11 is a 376-mile-long highway that stretches the entire length of the southern state, from Florida all the way through to North Carolina.

How to Prevent a Trucking Accident

Now that you know about some of Georgia’s deadliest highways, it’s best to consider how you can be safe when you must use them, or any road for that matter. Other drivers may not choose to be safe on the road, including big rig truck drivers. But you can still do your part to promote road safety.

Help prevent an accident with a large truck or commercial vehicle by doing the following:

  • Stay within the speed limit at all times
  • Turn your cell phone off, and put it out of reach
  • Avoid all types of distractions (eating while driving, multitasking behind the wheel, etc.)
  • Keep your car well-maintained (i.e. oil changes, brakes, tires, windshield wiper blades, etc.)

If you do happen to find yourself in an accident with a truck, try to stay calm. Immediately following the collision, the most important thing to assess is your health. Once you’ve determined you’re safe, call 9-1-1 to file a police report and try to capture images of the wreck, recording as many details as possible. This information will be beneficial if or when you decide to file a claim. After you’ve been checked out by a medical professional (remember, some injuries can take days or weeks to appear), now is the time to consider contacting a trucking accident attorney.
