Semi Truck Crash on I-20 Near Augusta, GA Injures Two

THOMSON, GA – Both drivers of a semi truck and a flatbed truck were injured in a crash on Interstate 20 near Thomson, GA on Thursday, August 5, 2010. The big rig driver was critically injured in the accident. Thomson is in McDuffie County, Georgia in the northeastern part of the state about 37 miles west of Augusta and 118 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The accident happened on I-20 between the 172 and 175 exits at about 6:30 a.m. The accident occurred just before the morning commute and halted eastbound traffic for hours afterward.

The Georgia Department of Transportation brought in Hazmat workers to clean up over 200 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled as a result of the accident. The drivers of both trucks were treated at the scene by McDuffie County firefighters and McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services personnel. Both truck drivers were airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Augusta, GA.

The two trucks that were involved were a tractor-trailer rig and a flatbed truck, owned by C&H Paving Co. located in Thomson. The driver of the flatbed was Jimmy Cody, from Thomson and the driver of the tractor-trailer rig was Samuel Hack, from Carrollton, Georgia. This information was provided by Georgia State Trooper Ben Rollins according to an article at the Augusta Chronicle website.

Rollins said the wreck happened when Cody went to merge into traffic and his vehicle was hit from behind by Hack’s 18 wheeler. Charges were pending Thursday afternoon.

The crash is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
