With Memorial Day weekend now upon us, travel is on the mind of millions of Americans as the Memorial Day weekend approaches. Drivers in Los Angeles, in particular, will be grateful that after 5 years of construction and 2 road closures that lead to to “Carmageddon,” the 10-mile northbound carpool lane on the I-405 freeway is finally open today, May 23, right before holiday weekend.

The new stretch of carpool lane will create the longest continuous such lane in the nation. As part of the $1 billion-plus project, the rebuilding of 3 major bridges across the freeway and wider flyover ramps at Wilshire Boulevard are still in the works, but for out-of-town travelers and commuters alike, the carpool lane grand opening will hopefully help keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Freeway Project Aimed to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

It’s been anticipated that traffic on the 405 will grow from the current 300,000 vehicles a day to 430,000 vehicles by 2030. Los Angeles Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who coined the term “Carmageddon,” for better or worse, said: “The project is expected to improve capacity and safety, and to help relieve worsening congestion on the perennially challenging freeway in the years ahead—although no one’s claiming it will actually reduce the onslaught of traffic.”

Other main details and updates of the project in addition to the bridge work and flyover ramps include:

  • Adding a 10-mile HOV lane on the NB I-405 between the I-10 and US-101 freeways
  • Widening 13 existing underpasses and structures
  • Constructing approximately 18 miles of retaining wall and sound wall

Making Roads Safer

The expansion of freeways to help with traffic safety does not discount that accidents still frequently happen. It’s important to be aware of road closures and navigational challenges, especially during heavy traffic times of holiday weekends.
